Tuck Kee (Ipoh) Sah Hor Fun – Cravings for the Crayfish Hor Fun

When it comes to Crayfish Hor Fun in Singapore, Tuck Kee (Ipoh) San Hor Fun is the place to visit. This place has been open for ages, and I first visited this place in 2002. With the recent makeover of Hong Lim Food Centre, the stall got a fresh look, making it looks bright and clean.

Tuck Kee Ipoh Sah Hor Fun

The first time I ate in this place, the Crayfish Hor Fun only cost me $4.50. But that is the price you get for half crayfish and prawns hor fun. Nowadays, you can get it for $6.50 for whole crayfish and prawn hor fun. Although it is still above the average food price in a Hawker Center, we are not talking about an average stall here. So for $6.50 for crayfish hor fun is a fair price, or even value for money in my opinion.

So how is the food? I will say that it is one of the best Hor Fun that I had tried since I had been staying in Singapore. The Hor Fun is smooth and springy, not to soft or to hard, it is al dente for a hor fun standard. The gravy here is the essence and it is what make the customer keep coming back. I remember watching in an old food program, it actually showing the process of the owner making the gravy. The base stock is made from prawn, prawn heads and chicken bones. Finished off with adding flour to thicken up the gravy. The gravy is smooth and robust. Combine it with fried shallots and fresh chives, it brings another dimension to the hor fun. (P.S. My wife insisted that I mentioned the chilli, according to her, the chilli is to die for, the spiciness and the sourness of the chilli compliments the gravy)

Crayfish and Prawn Ho Fun

The crayfish and prawns are as fresh as you can get. The owner normally went to the market every morning to buy the crayfish and prawns. The crayfish is cut into half, so you can easily pry the meat out using your chopstick, while the prawns are already peeled and cut into half.

If you don't feel like crayfish, you can go for other options such as chicken and prawn hor fun, clam and prawn hor fun, prawn hor fun, dumpling soup and mini white bak choy vegetables topped with the gravy and fried shallots. Although you can expect up to half an hour waiting time during peak period, their service is fast and efficient.

Overall, we really enjoy the food here and we don't mind waiting in line for it. We try to enjoy it while it last, because it does not seem that there will be a new generation taking over the operation if the current owner decided to retire. So if you are around Chinatown and looking having a craving for ho fun, this is the place to be. Cheers and enjoy!!!
