For
Singaporeans, we have the habit to keep the best things to ourselves.
Take into example Bak Kwa, one of the best delicacies that you can
find in Singapore. The top three brands you / tourist will think of
and know of are Bee Cheng Hiang (BCH), Lim Chee Guan (LCG) and
Fragrance. If we have a craving for even just one slice of the nicely
bbq pork or buying Singapore souvenirs for our overseas friends, the
choice will definitely be LCG then follow with BCH. For me, normally
I will skip Fragrance as it does not sits well with my taste buds.
This
year Chinese New Year, we were introduced to by our friend SC to Kim
Peng Hiang (KPH) Apparently KPH has been in the market for a long
time and quite popular as well. They are famous for the thickness of
the meat slices and the famous marinated blend with pineapple. Based
on my knowledge of cooking meat, the purpose of blending the
pineapples are for tenderising the meat and to cut through the
richness and the meatiness of the Bak Kwa. But in fact, having the
pineapple inside the Bak Kwa gives a fruit taste which is very
unique.
The best part of this place is that during the CNY period, they do not increase their price however they will limit the quantity you can purchase at one time. Unlike the famous three Bak Kwa shop that I mention above, that normally increase their price between $10 to $30 / kg during the festive season. So this time around, after the hard work of my wifey and our friend lining up for 2 hours, here is my opinion for the Kim Peng Hiang Bak Kwa.
For
their original version, Royal BBQ Pork, the cut is thicker then
normal bak kwa you find in the market. So don't be surprise if you
buy 1kg, you can actually get only 4-5 slices. Although it is thick,
the meat is well marinated and tender. The best part of KPH bak kwa
is licking off your fingers after eating the thick and well-bbq meat,
you are definitely in for a surprise. The bak kwa actually come with
saucy gravy, yup... GRAVY!!!. So it is going to be messy, but at the
end it is all worth it for you “finger licking good session”.
YUMMMYYYY!!
Of course you can be more classy use a slice of bread to polish off the gravy instead of being barbaric like me he..he..he..
The
pineapple version has a less gravy compare to the original. It is
more tender then the original version because the already incorporate
pineapple bits into it. It is also not surprising, if you spot the
pineapple fiber For those who have super sensitive tongue for
pineapple, this version might not be for you.
Overall,
thank you SC for introducing Kim Peng Hiang to us. It is very nice
and unique. I will definitely come back for more in the future,
hopefully without the lining up. Cheers!!.
