Cook & Brew |
Greatest
appreciation to HungryGoWhere and The Westin Singapore for
hosting the tasting session.
Cook
and Brew ('C&B') is the latest dining concept by Westin, making
its debut in Singapore. YES!! In case you have not heard, WESTIN is
back in Singapore after 12 years hiatus from this red dot. C&B is
a gastro-bar located on the 33rd floor of Asia Square
Tower 2, which provide a beautiful scenic view of Marina Bay. It
serves a modern interpretation of bar comfort food infuse with local
flair, not to mention extensive selections of wine and beers.

The Table Setting |
We
started our feast with Chilli Con Carne Volcano Topped with Cheddar
Cheese ($13) and Sushi Bowl ($18). For me, Chilli Con Carne is the
C&B interpretation of Curry Bread. They use paprika and chilli
here quite freely. Expect a slow burn of the heat when you bit into
the bun. I avoided the green chilli on top, as my spicy tolerance is
low. It is pretty tasty.

The
Sushi Bowl has a nice colourful presentation from the different
ingredients. The salmon is fresh and grilled just right. The meat is
still moist and tender. The teriyaki sauce and wasabi mayonnaise
works will to bind the whole ingredients, including the tamago and
pink radish.

Each
of the food served is actually paired with a shot of beer.
Unfortunately, I still can't consume alcohol, so I can't really
comment on the beer pairing.
For
the mains, we had Cook & Brew Fried Chicken ($27), Honey BBQ Ribs
($28), and German Butcher Platter ($34). C&B version of Fried
Chicken has a Korean flair. Using meat with the bone, it is well
seasoned and tasty. It is not too oily but very crispy, crisp to the
extent that some part of the meat becomes too dry. The wasabi
mayonnaise provides a good compliment while the spinach made you feel
less guilty. Maybe it’s my taste buds, personally I like my fried
chicken juicier.

For
the German Butcher Plate, it comes with selection of sausages,
kassler rib, and veal schnitzel. Sauerkraut, pickles and mash
potatoes are a given. The sausages are good. It is tender, juicy and
grilled just right. Meanwhile the kassler rib is tender and slightly
dry because it is the German version of cured meat. The veal
schnitzel lacks in flavour, losing its ‘spot’ from the dish as it
is surrounded by the yummy sausages. Mashed potatoes are smooth and
creamy, while the pickles and sauerkraut helps to balance the
fattiness in the proteins.

Honey
BBQ Ribs is my favourite dish for the night. It is perfectly
executed. The meat just fell of the bone when you cut into it, and
the charred flavour gives it an authentic BBQ feel. Forget the
cutlery, just be a little bit barbaric and use your fingers. Ribs are
made to be eaten with fingers. The coleslaw is fresh and good, and
the wedges are a good companion for the ribs. Yummyyyy!!!

In
between the main meal, we get to try the Hot Wings. Unlike other
establishments, there is only one level of spiciness here. If you
want me to rate it between 1 to 10, it will be on level 15, basically
blow your head off. I had a bite and it just stops me there. If you
are up to it, there is Hot Wings Challenge available. Finish 6 pair
of midwings and drumlets, within 4 minutes, you will get the dish for
free, photo on hall of fame plus 1 hour of free beer to subdue the
spiciness. If you fail, then take out the money of your pocket for
$20 hot wings and pay for your own beer.

Desserts
consist of Hot Chocolate Brownie ($15) and Almond Nougat Ice Cream
($15). The almond nougat come in bite size cylinder
shape and coated with crunchy chocolate. It has the right balance of
sweetness and the chocolate is very solid. It is good, but just does
not give you a wow factor. You can't help but to compare it Almond
Magnum ice cream that you get it from any convenience stores. The
brownie on the other hand catches your attention. It has a good
crunch on the outer part, while maintaining the chocolate moist
texture inside. Served it with ice cream, I'll have it as my desserts
any day.

The
atmosphere of this place is just gorgeous. Definitely a place you
want to hang out. It has a good view of the Marina Bay and will even
be better when they relocate the Singapore Port. The décor is
combination of wood, classy and classic furniture. You have the
option to place yourself in standing table area, couches, dining
area, balcony and even the bar. During the EPL season, this is the
place to be.

Overall,
Cook and Brew served up a good gastropub food with local twist. So if
you are looking for a place for good grub and good beer, give this
place a try. For wine lovers, check out their Enomatic wine dispenser
system. With a wine card, you can have the freedom to taste any wine,
and decided to go for the half or full glass. Looking forward to my
return visit here. Cheers!!
