[CLOSED] Chinatown Food Street [MEDIA INVITE]

Chinatown Food Street is a conceptual dining project undertaken by Select Group to revive the heritage food street in Singapore's Chinatown. Located at the end of Smith Street Chinatown (towards South Bridge Road), it's rejuvenation and facelift was completed in 2014. While maintaining the traditional look, it also create a comfortable environment to enjoy Singapore Street Food.

Animal Lanterns at North Bridge Road

As part of Singapore tradition, it is common for us to visit Chinatown in preparation to celebrate Chinese New Year festival. Street vendors will set up their stalls in Temple street, selling Chinese New Year items from snacks, biscuits, peanuts, flowers, decorations and etc. Along North Bridge road, you can see decorative Chinese Zodiac, and this year the Goat take the centre stage. Most of the stalls open until very late, so everyone can take their time to shop or just to experience the atmosphere.

Chinatown Food Street - Open till Late

Since the Chinatown Food Street re-open in 2014, this place actually provide a good place to rest and refresh, grab some food while we can continue our shopping. The opening hours are usually open until 11pm but during the festival seasons it will open until 2AM in the morning (the late hours will last until 18th February 2015 – CNY Eve).

For those who wants to tuck in to local flavours, you will have 24 hawker stalls to chose from. Starting from Char Kway Teow, Satay, Chicken Rice and even to Chilli Crab. Of course not to be miss during this special occasion, Yu Sheng will be available from Chinatown Crab Master from $28 for small portion and $38 for large portion). With a seating capacity of more than 650 people (and 800 people during CNY period), you won't have any problem finding a seat.

Left: Ice Kacang, Beef Noodle and Fried Kway Teow
Centre: Fried Oyster Omelette (Or Luak), Yu Sheng, and Wanton Mee

So what are Chubby Botak Koala's pick from the stalls (base on 12 stalls and competition)
Yu Sheng (from Chinatown Crab Master). Not only it was fresh and crunchy, the mixture of all the ingredients has a nice balance and flavour to it. Although we have to mix the ingredients by ourself, it still taste quite good.

Fried Bee Hoon and Prawn Fritter (from Chong Chong Ngoh Hiang Prawn Fritter). The fritters are crispy and crumble in your mouth. The fried fishball is springy (qq) and the fried bee hoon is tasty, and has a good bite into it.

Chicken Rice (from Bugis Street Famous Hainanese Chicken Rice). A Singapore national dish and comfort food for most of us. The rice is fragrant and cooked to al-dente. The chicken is tasty, springy and flavourful. The skin separated nicely from the meat, springy and complement the tender chicken meat nicely.
