Ah Seng Braised Duck Rice – Enjoyable Braised Duck

Ah Seng Braised Duck Rice

One of the places to go for my quick meal is Serangoon Garden Market. Reasons being that parking is a breeze and the standards of the stalls here is just above average.

Recently, I keep returning to Ah Seng Braised Duck Rice ('Ah Seng'), the one near the Bakery for lunch. It is also one of the stall that always have a queue. A quick research before writing this review, divulge that Ah Seng has been around from more than 20 years. So some of the regulars have been eating the braised duck since their childhood (including my wife). Amazing.

The Braised Duck

So what is good here. Of course the braised duck (One person serving with rice from $3.50). Braised in superior soya sauce, the braising gravy has a water consistency instead of thick gooey version. In short, Ah Seng follow the Teochew style of braised duck. The duck is well braised as you can feel the soya sauce infused in the meat. It is also lean and meaty, almost absent of any fats. Those who like their duck plump and juicy, this might not be the version for you.

Normally, I will order the braised pork belly ($2/3/4) with my duck. Like the duck, the pork belly can be consider lean however it remain tender and succulent. For me, the braised pork belly is to offset the duck meat that is devoid of fats.

If you are a fan of other parts of the meat from the pig's head region. Give the braised ear ($2 onwards) and tongue ($2/4) a try. I got this when the uncle mistaken my order. But I was glad that he did. The tongue is crunchy, well infused with braising sauce and succulent at the same time. This reminds me of my Mum's version of braised pig tongue. The ear has that nice gelatinous skin that melts with your mouth, while the soft-bone gave a nice crunchy feel when you bit into it. LD likes to buy their braised duck wings and duck necks for her family as well.

Pig's Ear and Tongue

Though the braised stuff are great, the way they cook the rice here definitely not to my liking. I always find the rice here is slightly under cooked, making it hard and dry. The saviour for the rice is the gravy and the robust duck bone soup.

The pig stomach soup ($3/4/5) is definitely worth a try. The milky colour soup is well-infused with pepper, it will send a nice warmth to your stomach. The pig stomach is very clean, leaving it with a good springy and tender texture for you to enjoy.

Pig Stomach Soup

Overall, As Seng Braised Duck Rice is definitely one of the place to consider for Teochew version of braised duck. Although it is not the best, it is definitely has its own follower. Cheers!!
