Wan He Lou – The Warmth of Lobster Porridge [MEDIA INVITE]

Wan He Lou at Maude Road

Lobster Porridge is a dish that can bring the words classy and comfort in the same sentence. Inspired by his regular trip to Desaru Malaysia, Chef Lai Siew Dee, the Executive Chef at Wan He Lou created this dish. It has won many awards including the top prize at a culinary event which was part of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Signature Lobster Porridge

Signature Lobster Porridge ($31.90 onwards). Cooked based on Teochew style porridge, each grain of rice remain wholesome and submerged in the cloudy lobster broth. The rice is al-dente and absorbed the lobster essence from the broth. The pepper added to this dish is generous and helps to warm up the stomach.

Crispy Lotus with Salted Egg ($11.90 for small; 19.90 for medium). The lotus is thinly sliced and deep fried and finished off with salted egg. It has a crispy exterior, but you can feel there is some moisture internally. The best part, of course, each piece of the fried lotus is evenly coated with the salty goodness and addictive flavour from the salted egg. Yum Yum, they should pack this sell it as snacks.

Pan Fried Kurobuta Pork ($14.90). The pork is tender and almost melts in your mouth. The sweet and savoury sauce that glazed the pork definitely accentuates the flavour of the pork.

Coconut Pudding with Ice Cream ($9.90). This is definitely a must-try dessert here. The coconut pudding is creamy, soft, bouncy and bursting with coconut flavour. Topped that with refreshing coconut ice cream, it was just a perfect ending to the meal at Wan He Lou.

While the dishes mentioned above can be considered the specialities of Wan He Lou, they are showcasing new dishes for the 5 course set lunch menu, priced at $12.80 each. To make it merrier, a minimum 3 pax required to order the set lunch menu.

Langoustine Bee Hoon. A silky smooth rice noodle, cooked with seafood broth. The bee hoon absorbs the richness and creaminess of the broth. A white bee hoon version of Wan He Lou.

Black Truffle Pork Chop Rice. A juicy succulent pork chop topped with creamy sauce flavoured with truffle oil. At first I find the combination is weird, after a while the taste just grow on you. A dish worth trying.

Seafood Pasta with Whole Abalone
. It is definitely a forgettable dish for me. It's like mixing pasta with cream base soup. I will give this dish a miss.

For the set lunch menu, it will be served with side dishes of spring rolls, potato salad, pudding dessert and homemade ice lemon tea.

The setting of the restaurant is simple and filled with natural lights. The walls are decorated with framed photos of the food, newspaper clippings, and some interesting captions.
