[CLOSED] Gu Cheng – Penang's Food Family Recipe [MEDIA INVITE]

Gu Cheng Singapore

Penang, Malaysia, a heritage city renowned for its delicious local food. When you ask the local where to “jiak” in Penang, the list will more likely to be a mile long. My multiple visits to Penang also never absent of a good chow there. So when there is a tasting of Penang Food, I did not hesitate to say YES.

Prawn Paste Chicken

Gu Cheng is a new family cafe serving Penang food recently open at Crawford Lane, across Textile Centre. The recipes are based on the Cindy's (the owner) family recipe. To ensure the kitchen churned out the home flavours, Cindy's Mother is the appointed Chief Quality Controller.

Crispy Tofu

We started with Penang Laksa ($7.80) & Penang Hokkien Mee ($8.80). Penang Laksa is also known as Asam Laksa. It is a combination of tangy and spicy flavours that perk up this dish. The broth of the laksa has that touch of spiciness and tanginess, which entice your appetite. Gu Cheng's recipe uses combination of mackerel and sardine, so you can taste two different flavours in the fish. They are not stingy with the fish, so you can taste it in every scoop of the broth. I only wish that there is more “heh ko sauce” (sweetened prawn paste) to give it more Omph!!

Penang Hokkien Mee is the equivalent to Singapore version of Prawn Soup Noodle. The broth is well infused with prawn flavour. The combination of yellow noodle and bee hoon nicely soak up the broth in every slurp. Considering the amount of chilli going into the bowl, I expect the dish to be spicier instead it the spicy level is manageable. A good comfort food.

Beef Stew ($8.80). The stewed beef is tender and succulent. It shows that it has been cooked over long period, and the meat just melts in your mouth. Surprisingly good and it goes down well with the pipping hot white rice.

Gu Cheng's Signature Carrot Cake ($8.80). This is the signature dish of Gu Cheng and absolutely the best dish of the night. The cubed radish cake is deep fried at first, resulting in a crispy exterior with soft and smooth interior. On its own, it is very flavourful. It is then stir-fried with prawns, eggs, Chinese sausage, preserved radish stir-fried with Gu Cheng special sauce. This dish is so delicious and addictive, made us place a repeat order for this dish. Definitely a must try here. Yummy!!

The best dish !!!

Penang Cuttlefish Kang Kong ($6.80). A simple dish, with multiple ingredients. A healthy boiled Kang Kong, boiled cuttlefish and crispy deep fried youtiao topped with heh ko sauce. A good side dish to accompany the main meal.

There are other side dishes such as Penang Lor Bak ($3.80 per piece), Penang Otak ($3.80 per piece), Crispy Tofu ($5.80 for 4 pcs) and Prawn Paste Chicken ($5.80 for 4 pcs). They are very decent, tasted more like home cooked dishes. Don't expect it to give you the WOW factor.

Penang Otak

When you are dining here, try their homemade drinks such as Gu Cheng's Signature Rose Tea ($3)
Sour Plum / Calamansi / Barley ($2).

Homemade Drinks: Calamansi, Signature Rose Tea & Sour Plum

For desserts, Gu Cheng currently only offer the Nyonya Kueh ($1.50 each). The kuehs are stocked up fresh every morning. At the end of the day, any unsold of Nyonya Kueh are disposed or given away.

The décor of Gu Cheng is like a traditional Chinese tea house. The furniture are wooden tables and chairs, painted in black. It is very minimalistic.

Penang Lor Bak

Gu Cheng definitely dished out many Penang specialties using its unique family recipe, where it tasted like home cooked food by a Penang mom instead of a Penang restaurant or hawker centre. The Signature carrot cake is definitely a must try. Cheers!!
