Nalan – Indian Vegetarian Dining [MEDIA INVITE]

Nalan, one of Singapore's leading Indian vegetarian restaurants that showcase authentic vegetarian recipes from North and South India. The team behind Nalan believes in the rejuvenating powers of this healthy lifestyle, where this meatless cuisine made from the freshest and finest ingredients.

We started the dinner with Cream of Mushroom (S$7). It looks similar to the regular cream of mushroom soup, however the version here very peppery. It sure warms the throat and heats up your taste buds in anticipation what comes next.

Daaba Salad ($6). Looks like general Ahcar vegetable mix. However, they really crank up the heat on this salad. Further CSI-ing, I found chopped Bird's eye chilli inside. I actually gulp down a significant amount of my mango lassi ($5) to put out the fire. For those who likes fiery dishes, this is the one for you.

Tandoori Platter ($25). Paneer Tikka, Vegetable Sheek Kebab, Hara Bara Kebab, Tandoori Cauliflower and Tandoori Mushrooms. Our version of the platter tonight. Interesting and my personal pick is the Paneer Tikka. The blocks of the cottage cheese are thick, creamy with a slight smokey flavour.

Gobi Manchurian ($12). Cauliflower deep fried with capsicum, onion and spicy sauce. A combination of crunchy and crisp cauliflower, topped with sweet spicy sauce. It is delicious and appetizing at the same time. A vegetarian version of Korean Fried Chicken.

Our main meals consist of the carbo and curries. The carbo includes Jeera Rice ($8 – rice with cumin seeds), Rumali Roti ($4,50 – thin Indian flatbread), Chappati ($2.50), Butter and Garlic Naan ($4.50 each), and Kashmiri Naan.

This is the first time I tried Jeera Rice. The basmati rice is al-dente and aromatic with a subtle touch of cumin seeds. The rice actually goes well with any type of curries. Rumali Roti is one of the thinnest Indian bread I have ever seen. Soft, fluffy, not oily and almost as thin as 3 ply tissue paper. The colour is light and bright, the opposite of the more healthy chappati.

The butter and garlic naan are thick and aromatic. I personally prefer the butter naan instead of garlic. For those who like sweet naan, the Kashmiri naan will make it a perfect end to your meal.

The curries or main dishes consist of Kadai Paneer ($14, Cottage cheese cubes with capsicum & onion cubes with Kadai Masala); Aloo Palak ($11, Potatoes cooked with Spinach & Spices); Mushroom Mutter Methi ($13, Mushroom & Green peas with onion, garlic and chilli); and Dal Makhani ($11, black dal with spices, butter and cream).

I am actually quite a fan for cottage cheese, so not surprising that Kadai Paneer got my vote here. The combination of cottage cheese and spices, just made the dish creamy and appetizing. Another dish that I will keep an eye when dining in an Indian restaurant. Aloo Palak is a different version of one of my must order Indian dish, Palak Paneer. Instead of cottage cheese in the spinach gravy, the cheese is replaced with potato. The potato gives this dish a contrasting texture compare to the spinach purée. Yum yum.

I believe mushroom is best savour as natural as possible. In Mushroom Mutter Methi, the spices, especially the garlic and chilli overpowered the mushroom flavours. Definitely a No No for me. If you like something more earthy, you can try Dal Makhani. It has black lentil and red kidney beans, something that I will try to avoid.

We sample 2 type of desserts Gulab Jamun ($4.50) and Carrot Halwa ($5.50). Gulab Jamun is a spongy milky ball soaked in rose syrup. Two words to describe this dish, Extremely Sweet. Cringe!! I am more acceptable to Carrot Halwa, which combines carrots, milk, dried fruit and nuts. Feels like Christmas Pudding x Carrot Cake, with Indian flavour.

The concept of the restaurant is modern, simple with open look. Located in the Basement two of Capitol Piazza, it is easily the most crowded restaurant on this floor. Since it served vegetarian food, Nalan has its own loyal customer base irrelevant to the food traffic on that level. If you have any dietary restriction or food allergy, please let the team know and the chefs will accommodate to your request.

Overall, I enjoyed the dining experience at Nalan. It was an eye opener, especially on Indian Vegetarian Cuisine. The carbo dishes are the same as the normal Indian cuisine, but the main dishes are just unique. Definitely a must try place for vegetarian or if you are looking for something different. Cheers!!
