George Town – Festive Delights and BBQ Skewers [MEDIA INVITE]

George Town Tze Char & Craft Beer has launched their festive delights and BBQ skewers menu. This delicious menu will pair nicely with their Craft beer on the tap from Brewlander, bottled craft beer from Japan and UK, fine wines and award-winning sake and gin. Their signature mix includes the Chendol Gin and Rojak Gin.

Festive Dual Flavoured Turkey 
Festive Dual Flavoured Turkey (Deep-Fried Turkey and Braised Turkey with Guangxi Sauce) - $28. Surprisingly tender, succulent and un-turkey like. It tasted similar to big size chicken and it is not gamy. The deep-fried turkey reminds me of the Hainanese pork chop, with ketchup on top. Meanwhile, the Guangxi sauce is made from Chinese chives and ginger, has a nice aromatic flavour.

Metal Jacket Drumlets ($18). Coated in sweet and savoury sauce, these sexy drumlets are a great dish for your meal or a great nibble to go with your beer and drinks. Though it is covered with aluminium foil, you will still get some sauce on your fingers. Allowing you a finger-licking good moment.

Garlic Fried Tilapia ($35). The fish is deep-fried till crispy and covered with spicy and aromatic garlic. The flavour is bold, strong and spicy. LD enjoy the crispy tail and fins, while I prefer the flesh. I find the sauce is too spicy for me, however, it is suitable for spicy food lovers.

Hotplate Black Pepper Wagyu with Parmesan Butter ($28). There is an old school feel when beef is served on a hot plate. I like the tenderness of the wagyu with black pepper sauce. However, I feel the parmesan butter is a bit over the top. You got a lot of flavours going on the plate, but it just covered the true taste of the beef. Another option is to serve / offer an option to serve this dish with mantou or bread, so it can be used to dip into the gravy.

Penang Fried Kway Teow ($10, Small). LD and I had their Penang Fried Kway Teow on a few occasions. Surprisingly, this dish is just getting better and better. You get the Wok Hei, followed by smooth and silky rice noddle and coated eggs. Yummy.

George Town Choy Sum ($12). Sweet and crunchy Choy Sum, cooked with oyster sauce and topped with fried shallots. A simple vegetable dish, executed spot-on.

George Town also launching their BBQ skewers menu, where the meat and vegetables are marinated with their secret rub and bbq to perfection. We were served Wagyu Beef ($5), Mutton ($1), Beef Tongue ($3), Pig Intestine ($2) and Taiwan Sausage ($2) for the meat. For the vegetable Potato ($1), Brinjal / egg plant ($2), Mushroom ($2), Asparagus ($2) and Long Bean ($2).

Our pick from the skewers are the wagyu beef, mutton and beef tongue get our thumbs up. The meat is slightly charred, juicy and succulent. The seasoning is not a strong China’s lamb skewers marinate, instead, it has a hint of Nanyang curry flavour in it. The vegetable will need some improvement on the presentation and bbq timing.

Located at Boat Quay area, with a view of Singapore iconic river and the Parliament House, George Town Tze Char is a great place to enjoy your evening. I am impressed with the creativity of Charles (the owner) that keep coming with new dishes, especially the turkey dish.

Overall, it was a pleasure returning to George Town to try their new dishes. Turkey with Two Flavours, Metal Jacket Drumlets and Garlic Fried Tilapia are good. While their signature Penang Fried Kway Teow is just getting better and better. If you are around Boat Quay area, check out George Town Tze Char and Craft Beer. Cheers!!

Modori Goodle Collection – Spectacular Korean Kitchenware [MEDIA DROP]

A few weeks back, LD and I received an invitation to try out Modori New Goodle Collection. Going through the email, the 1st thing that catches our attention is the design of the cookware. The combination of black metal (like a cast iron look) with the wood handle just bewitched us, we immediately say YES.

The Modori New Goodle Collection arrived at our house the following week. The first thing that I notice, the box containing the complete sets of the Goodle collections is lighter than I expected. It consists of Goodle Saucepan, Goodle Frying Pan 24cm, 24cm Pan Lid of Frying Pan, Goodle Egg Pan and Goodle 28cm Wok. Each of the cookware is individually wrapped and packed securely in an outer box, to ensure that you receive the goods in a prestigious condition.

So, what is Modori Goodle Collection? It is a cookware that combines all the advantages of coated cookware, stainless steel cookware and cast-iron cookware. It adopts a special Inoble coating, a patented oil road method, and is made of fine coating particles, which enhances the non-stick effect and makes it easier to clean after use.

If you cook regularly at home, you will know that each different type of cookware has its plus and minus points. Modori Goodle Collection, just makes this simple, removing the headache and perfect for everyone, starting from Novice to Expert cook in the Kitchen.

I use the Goodle Frying Pan 24 cm for my pan-fried chicken. I like the way the pan delivers solid heat retention like a cast iron pan. On the third batch of pan-frying the chicken, I only use only a few drops of oil and the chicken thigh seared nicely, sealing the juice inside the flesh and cooked evenly. It delivers the same result as the cast iron and it is easy to clean.

This is where the Inoble Coating shows its strength. Inoble coating uses low-pressure spraying with countless tiny dot-like particles. Repeat the same process 6 times to enhance the durability of the coating. Generally, the thicker the coating, the more cracks will appear, but the Inoble coating will not crack and is 7 times thicker than the ordinary coating.

In addition to PFOA FREE, Modori only uses high-purity aluminum, so there is no need to worry about harmful substances.

Goodle Saucepan
One of my pet peeves when reheating canned soup like mushroom soup or chicken soup is you need to keep stirring so the soup does not split. If the stainless-steel pot becomes too hot, the residue of the soup will stick to the edges of the pot. With Modori Goodle, the soup seems to glide seamlessly around the pot and it does not stick. Another plus point for Goodle.

Finally, I decided to challenge myself to create Tamagoyaki (Japanese Omelette) using the Goodle Egg Pan. The eggs are cooked evenly, it does not stick and I manage to do a full roll. If you are not an egg roll person, you can fry your egg the way you like, do a grill cheese sandwich or fry some bacon or sausages.

The attention to detail in creating Modori Goodle Collections is obvious in the final products. The zen looking wood handle, made from Korean Somei Yoshino cherry tree. It is comfortable to handle, easy to grasp and has no harmful substance. Plus, Modori handle has no rivets, is more hygienic, and is easy to clean!

Do that note that all Modori Goodle Collection are suitable for cooking with various stoves (Gas Stove / Induction Cooker / Ceramic Cooker / Heating Plate). It CANNOT be used in the microwave.

CBK Verdict: Impressive. Light, sturdy and deliver all the advantages of coated cookware, stainless steel cookware and cast-iron cookware. It is safe, does not stick and easy to clean. It is suitable for every level of cook, from novice to expert. It is a good investment and makes cooking fun and a breeze. MUST BUY!

Mazzo – Hearty Italian Food, Drinks & Hospitality [MEDIA INVITE]

Mazzo is an Italian centric Restaurant & Bar tucked along Club Street. Armed with Italian delights such as Chargrilled meats, homemade pasta, 48-hour fermented pizzas, and Italian antipasti served with the warm hospitality of Patrick and Sebastian, it is a place to relax and enjoy. Furthermore, Mazzo also carries a wide variety of premium wines from Italy and across the world, plus sakes, whiskies and cocktails.

We started the tasting with Antipasti ($39, Chef's Recommendation; sharing for 2). Consist of Cold Cuts, Bruschetta, Risotto Balls, Mozzarella, Calamari & Wings. A sampling platter of most starter items at Mazzo. The cold cuts are meaty and not waxy. The bruschetta offer comes in 3 different varieties: tomato, garlic and mushroom & cheese. All three are consistent, it just depends on your preference.

Antipasti
The arancini is just magnifico. Fried till golden grown, it has a light crust, followed by al-dente risotto and melted cheese. The tomato sauce at the bottom balances the richness of the arancini nicely. The burrata is on the dense side, showcasing thick creamy cheese, paired with beautiful slices of parma ham. The calamari have a crispy exterior with bouncy flesh, while Mazzo fried wings are the in-house version of har cheong gai. Not Italian, but it’s good to have as bar snacks. Yum!

Octopus Leg ($34). One of LD’s favourite seafood. We get a subtle charred aroma, followed by juicy and bouncy octopus’ leg. It is served balsamic vinegar dressing, asparagus and mesclun salad. The fresh and crunchy asparagus complements the octopus through its contrasting texture. While the octopus is nice, we were hoping it was more charred, for the extra aroma and crispy texture on the exterior.

Crab Meat Pasta ($28) - Fresh pasta tagliolini & tomatoes basil. The al-dente fresh pasta soaks up the sweet tangy tomato sauce together with the natural sweetness from the crab. The surprise package here is the earthy alfalfa, delivering a contrasting flavour and texture that balance this pasta dish to perfection. Impressive!

Half plate each of mazzO Pizza ($28) and Four Cheese Pizza ($27). This duo version was served for the tasting. Paying homage to the city of Naples, Italy (the modern birthplace of pizza), Mazzo ferments the dough for 48 hours. This result is airy and lighter crust plus it adds a more complex flavour to the crust.

We like the mazzO pizza as the toppings (Ricotta Cheese, Pepperoni, Truffle Paste & Spinach) has a nice balance of meat, cheese, vegetables and the aromatic aroma of truffle. The crust is light, crispy and coated with Salmonella flour so it does not burn the crust. Meanwhile, the Four Cheese Pizza (Mozzarella, Taleggio, Cheddar & Gorgonzola) is created for blue cheese lovers, those who appreciate the strong and pungent cheese. It was just too overpowering for us.

I ended the meal with Tiramisu ($12) and LD choose Cheesecake ($12). The portion of the tiramisu is generous. It is soft, moist and the balance of the ingredient’s coffee, kahlua and cream are just spot on. Every scoop of the tiramisu just melts in your mouth.

The Nutella cheesecake is also awesome. The Nutella is solid, while the cheesecake effortlessly hiding in the background. Served with vanilla gelato, I feel like eating a Nutella ice cream cake.

At the start of the dinner, LD had the prosecco, which she describes as lightly sweet and bubbly. The red wine served following that has full body, almost Shiraz like.

Mazzo seating area can be split into 2 sections. One side is a bar / gastropub, filled with high chairs and high tables. While the other, decorated like a classic restaurant-style with black leather seats against the walls, wooden chairs on the outside and tables covered with white colour table cloths.

The service here is excellent. Patrick, Sebastian and the crew are friendly and attentive. As we are seated close to the kitchen, we can hear the conversation between the crew. I am impressed with how the service staff pay close attention to the preference of regular customers and remind the kitchen crew. Plus, I also recommended this place to a friend for their dinner and they were amazed by the food and service standard here.

Overall, it was a pleasure dining at Mazzo. The food, drink and service here are excellent. They are the complete package and you definitely must give this place a try. We will return to try their full range of Chargrilled Meats. Keep up the good work. Ciao! Cheers!!
